Internship Opportunities

Election Law Clerk

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is a national nonprofit organization that works to turn environmental values into national, state and local priorities.  Along with our 2 million members, LCV works to defend federal protections for our air, land, water and health; advance meaningful progress at the state and local levels; and build the long-term political power needed to win on climate change.

LCV’s work to protect and advocate for the environment reflects the organization’s commitment to racial, social, and environmental justice. Engaging communities of color among other key constituencies for the environment is an organizational priority. Within the organization, we aim to create a workplace culture and policies and practices that demonstrate how we value equity and inclusion.

LCV seeks a full-time Election Law Clerk to work in its Office of General Counsel during the summer of 2019.  Because of the quick pace and varied nature of LCV’s work, the Office of General Counsel must provide guidance on a wide range of legal issues, including but not limited to state and federal campaign finance and election law, tax-exempt law, nonprofit governance, lobbying and ethics, contracts, employment law issues, and intellectual property concerns. Tasks will include conducting legal research in a variety of areas (with a particular focus on election law), drafting filings and general correspondence to government agencies, preparing legal memoranda for the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel, and analyzing legislation and litigation impacting LCV’s membership and operations.

During the course of the internship, there will likely be opportunities for the Election Law Clerk to observe meetings and hearings at government agencies, such as the FEC, and/or relevant legal presentations at local academic and professional organizations. There will also be opportunities for the Election Law Clerk to attend broader meetings of in-house counsel alongside LCV’s lawyers.

For students who are not eligible for funding through their school, funding may be available.  Part- and full-time opportunities are also available during the fall and spring semesters.

Minimum Requirements:

1-2 years of law school with excellent academic performance; ability to research and analyze information; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; strong computer skills. Prior experience with nonprofit organizations or political campaigns is helpful.
