Clean Buses for Healthy Niños

Our children and our communities have a right to breathe clean air. That’s why the League of Conservation Voters’ Chispa program launched the Clean Buses for Healthy Niños campaign. Through Clean Buses for Healthy Niños, we are activating communities across the country, to call on governors and elected officials, to put the health of our children and families first by using their state’s Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust to fund clean, zero-emission school buses.

Why the Volkswagen (VW) settlement? Well, VW cheated federal emissions tests and polluted the air we breathe with toxins emitted by diesel vehicles, which increase respiratory illnesses and further the effects of climate change. Now, VW is on the hook to pay a total of $4.7 billion dollars for polluting our air and putting profits over our health. Of that, $2.7 billion will be going to states for projects.

Chispa is proposing that these dollars should be re-invested in our communities and school districts. With this money, our states will be able take dirty diesel buses off our roads and replace them with clean, zero-emission buses. This is particularly important for low-income and communities of color where students and families are most at risk of breathing dirty air, and are disproportionately suffering from pollution.

You can sign the petition to your governor asking for clean buses in your state and text BUSES to 877-877 for more details. You can also follow us on FacebookTwitter, and in the media for more information about how we are organizing our communities to help clean up our air and build the political power necessary to ensure that clean buses become a reality! It’s time for #CleanRide4Kids now, so join the fight today.
